Chapter 13
The regulation for placing students in the top classes at Third High School's senior year was different from other schools.
There were twelve classes in the senior year, with 360 students. Based on an assessment at the beginning of the school year, the top sixty students were split into Class One and Class Two, which were dedicated to intensive teaching for top students.
Although both Class One and Class Two were top classes, the learning atmosphere between the top thirty and the bottom thirty students was bound to be different.
Even if Yu Luoyin hadn't said anything, Bai Xunyin would have tried her best to get into Class One.
In previous exams, her scores had always hovered around the top ten in the whole school. As long as she performed normally, getting into Class One wouldn’t be a problem. As for Yu Luoyin...
Bai Xunyin hadn't expected his grades to be even better than hers.
After parting ways with Yu Luoyin at the back playground, Bai Xunyin was dragged back to class by the frantic Amo, who had been looking for her. Before leaving school, she had an inexplicable urge to go to the teacher's office.
Bai Xunyin asked Shen Langli for a copy of the school’s ranking for the past two years.
She had always only focused on her own grades, knowing roughly where she stood without paying attention to others. Now... she wanted to see Yu Luoyin's results.
If he told her to aim for Class One, he must be very confident in his own scores, right?
That competitive spirit flared up, and Bai Xunyin took the ranking sheet home to look for Yu Luoyin's name.
Ten minutes later, she felt a rare sense of defeat.
Compared to her ranking in the top ten each time, Yu Luoyin had consistently been in the top three in the whole school since the first year of high school.
Even at his worst, he never fell below fifth place.
Compared to him, she still had a long way to go.
Bai Xunyin furrowed her brows, a flash of determination in her clear eyes.
The funniest thing was, Yu Luoyin's best subject was physics, yet he had asked her for tutoring in it... Wasn't that just cruel?
Thinking about the half month spent tutoring him in the library, Bai Xunyin felt deceived.
This feeling drove her to focus intensely on the physics exam the next day, carefully checking every answer.
She wanted to surpass Yu Luoyin for once.
From comparing their past exam scores, she found Yu Luoyin usually scored seven or eight points higher in physics. In the crucial final year before college entrance exams, even a one-point difference could be significant, let alone seven or eight.
But Bai Xunyin believed that with effort, she might have a chance to surpass him once.
After the high-stress exam, Bai Xunyin's slender shoulders were sore from tension.
Amo, who had been in a different exam room, rushed over excitedly after finishing: "Yinyin, how did you do? The key points you highlighted for me yesterday were spot on! I think I have a chance to get into the top thirty!"
Amo had good grades but was never among the top students—mainly because she was too playful and never devoted all her energy to studying.
But with effort, she could still fight for a spot in the top thirty.
Bai Xunyin was relieved that her intuition about the key points had been correct.
She took out her phone to type: [No problem, we’ll definitely both get into Class One.]
"Hehe, I think so too." Amo laughed, hooking her arm around Bai Xunyin's shoulder, chattering about other gossip: "Let me tell you, I was in the same exam room as Sheng Churan. That fool finished the last exam in just ten minutes and left early. She's probably going to block Yu Luoyin."
Bai Xunyin: [...]
She was amazed by Amo’s gossiping ability.
Ever since learning about Sheng Churan chasing Yu Luoyin and Yu Luoyin having her WeChat, Amo had somehow gathered all sorts of gossip.
Amo’s understanding was that Sheng Churan was wasting her time, and Yu Luoyin was actually interested in Bai Xunyin.
This gave Bai Xunyin a headache; hearing these two names together made her want to run away.
"Let's go, let’s go." Amo got excited, dragging Bai Xunyin along. "Which exam room is Yu Luoyin in? Let's go watch the fun, Sheng Churan is bound to fail again!"
Bai Xunyin didn’t want to join in, and tried to leave with her backpack.
"Yinyin! You're not going to let me go alone, are you?" Amo clung to her, pleading, "Come on, let’s go."
With that, she stubbornly dragged Bai Xunyin to the end of the corridor, around the corner—where Yu Luoyin's exam room was.
…
Bai Xunyin was dragged over forcefully, unable to speak and so anxious that she almost wanted to bite Amo.
Unfortunately, Sheng Churan was indeed waiting at the exam room entrance to block someone, with Zhong Qin beside her.
As Amo insistently pulled Bai Xunyin over, the students from that exam room started coming out one after another.
Yu Luoyin was among them, walking out leisurely with his hands in his pockets and a backpack slung over one shoulder, accompanied by Lu Ye. As soon as Sheng Churan saw him, she immediately approached with a bright smile.
From a distance, they couldn't hear what was being said, but Yu Luoyin's expression remained indifferent, his dark eyes cold and silent. Blocked by Sheng Churan, he couldn't leave, and a trace of impatience flashed across his handsome face.
In front of the tall, slender boy stood a girl who only reached his shoulder. From afar, with her delicate and nimble figure, they looked like a perfect match in terms of appearance, popularity, and even a kind of sunny 'healthiness.'
Bai Xunyin suddenly felt a sharp pang in her eyes and lowered her gaze, wanting to leave.
But Amo wouldn't let her, and boldly called out, "Yu Luoyin!"
Her voice was loud enough for almost everyone in the hallway to hear. The initially impatient Yu Luoyin also heard and looked up in surprise, meeting Bai Xunyin's clear eyes.
The girl's eyes held a hint of panic, as if caught in the awkward position of accidentally witnessing someone else's 'privacy,' feeling both guilty and a bit irritable.
Yu Luoyin was momentarily taken aback, finding the emotions in Bai Xunyin's eyes intriguingly complex.
At last, she was willing to look at him directly.
But being thin-skinned, Bai Xunyin shot a reproachful glance at Amo, shook off her hand, and ran away.
"Hold this," Yu Luoyin tossed his backpack to Lu Ye beside him and moved to sidestep Sheng Churan blocking his way to chase after her.
"Yu Luoyin!" Sheng Churan felt utterly humiliated in front of everyone. Seeing Yu Luoyin about to chase after Bai Xunyin, she finally couldn't hold back the tears in her eyes and asked pitifully, "What do you mean by this?"
Yu Luoyin paused and looked back at her with a frown. "What did I do to you?"
From the beginning, it was this girl chasing after him, and now he was in the wrong just because he didn't reciprocate?
Plenty of people liked him, but he didn’t need to take responsibility for every girl's feelings, right?
"I'm standing right in front of you, and you act like you don't see me. But as soon as Bai Xunyin appears, you run after her. You even gave her your WeChat!" Sheng Churan was extremely aggrieved, ignoring the curious students around. "What makes her better than me? Bai Xunyin is a mute!"
Why did she always lose to this mute, whether it was in the school beauty contest or with Yu Luoyin?
Hearing the word 'mute,' Yu Luoyin's initially impatient expression turned even colder.
He tilted his head, looking at Sheng Churan with a faint smile. "Do you know what makes you inferior to Bai Xunyin?"
Sheng Churan was indignant. "I'm not inferior to her!"
"Confidence is a good thing, but..." Yu Luoyin smiled slightly, unkindly adding, "Calling someone a mute while using your own mouth to gossip doesn't make you any better."
With that, Yu Luoyin no longer paid attention to the stunned Sheng Churan and quickly chased after Bai Xunyin.
Passing by Amo, who was happily watching the drama, he murmured, "Thanks."
